Why Choose a Home EV Charger?
In Hong Kong, waiting in line at public charging stations often takes 30-60 minutes, whereas a home charger allows you to plug in as soon as you arrive home and wake up to a full battery. Taking a Tesla Model 3 Long Range (82kWh battery) as an example, it takes approximately 11 hours to fully charge using a 7.4kW home charger. Based on Hong Kong’s off-peak electricity rate (approx. HK$1.07/kWh), a full charge costs only about HK$88, which is far lower than the cost of public fast charging.

Things to Confirm Before Installation
- Power Supply Type: Confirm whether your unit has a single-phase or three-phase power supply (check the label on your distribution board or ask the management office). Most Hong Kong residences have a single-phase 220V supply, making the 7.4kW model the correct choice.
- Meter Capacity: It is recommended that the remaining capacity is at least 32A (i.e., the meter's upper limit minus the power consumption of existing equipment).
- Parking Space Location: The charger is installed on the wall next to your parking space. You will need to run cables from the distribution board to the installation site; it is recommended to confirm the route in advance.
- Management Office Approval: Installing a charger in a private residential parking space usually requires approval from the management committee; it is recommended to apply in advance.
Hong Kong Government Subsidy Schemes
The Environment and Ecology Bureau of Hong Kong provides the "EV-Charging Easy" scheme, which offers subsidies for the installation of charging infrastructure in private car parks. For specific amounts and eligibility requirements, please visit the official website of the Environment and Ecology Bureau. LINKO can assist with the completion of application documents.
Estimated Installation Costs
The installation fee for a typical residence (including the charger, cabling, and labor) is approximately HK$8,000–12,000, depending on the distance between the distribution board and the parking space, and whether wall drilling is required. LINKO offers free on-site assessments and quotations.
